On 16 August 1501, the legendary artist Michelangelo was entrusted with the creation of a statue of David by the Overseers of the Office of Works (the Operai) of the Duomo in Florence.
This commission marked a pivotal moment in Renaissance art, as the young sculptor was tasked with transforming a massive block of marble into what would become one of the most iconic masterpieces in the history of Western art.
Statue of David, symbolising the biblical hero, was intended to embody the ideals of beauty, strength, and civic virtue, destined to adorn the Florence Cathedral.
