A Dhaka court has granted a 10-day remand against Salman F. Rahman, private industry and investment advisor to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and former Law Minister Anisul Huq in a murder case filed in connection with the killings during the quota reform movement.
They were brought to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court. They were subsequently held in the court’s lock-up. The remand application was heard shortly before 7:00pm in the presence of the accused, and the court approved their remand.
However, no lawyer stood for Salman F Rahman or Anisul Huq during the hearing. Court sources revealed that no lawyer was willing to represent them.
Meanwhile, as Salman F. Rahman and Anisul Huq were being taken to court, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami-affiliated lawyers raised various slogans, demanding the prosecution of these two high-ranking individuals of the Awami League government. Eggs were thrown at them in protest.
Earlier in the day, starting from 5:00pm, police, army, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed in the CMM Court area for security.
During a demonstration by the anti-discrimination student movement on 16 July, clashes in front of Dhaka College resulted in the deaths of two individuals: Dhaka College student Sabuj Ali (26) and a hawker, Md. Shahjahan (26). Two murder cases have been filed at New Market Police Station in connection with these incidents. Salman F. Rahman and Anisul Huq were arrested on Tuesday as alleged instigators in the Shahjahan murder case.
