United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus to persist in its efforts to ensure inclusivity in the lead-up to Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
Guterres emphasised the importance of incorporating the voices of women, youth, and citizens across the nation, including those from minority and indigenous communities, as the country transitions towards electoral proceedings in a statement issued by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Monday (12 August).
“The Secretary-General welcomes the interim government's endeavours to restore calm and organise parliamentary elections in Bangladesh,” the statement read.
“He stands in full solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and advocates for the complete respect of their human rights,” it added.
António Guterres has also emphasised the necessity for a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation into the incidents of violence.
He reiterated the necessity for a thorough, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all acts of violence that have occurred.
The interim government was established on 8 August, following the collapse of the Awami League government on 5 August, after a mass uprising led by students.
The unrest resulted in the deaths of over 400 individuals during and after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
