Lawyer appointed to release of imprisoned Bangladeshi workers in UAE

The interim government has appointed lawyer Olora Afrin to advocate for the release of 57 Bangladeshi workers who were sentenced to prison by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government for staging protest in solidarity with the quota reform movement.

This information was disclosed in a notice signed by Mission Chief Muhammad Mizanur Rahman on Monday (12 August). 

Previously, the Foundation for Law and Development (FLAD) announced that they are providing legal support to the 57 Bangladeshi workers.

On 19 July, expatriate Bangladeshis gathered on several streets in the UAE in support of the quota reform movement. During the protest, a group was arrested by local law enforcement on charges of inciting a riot.

Subsequently, three Bangladeshis were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 53 others received 10-year sentences and one individual was given an 11-year sentence for illegally entering the country and participating in the assembly. The court also ordered their expulsion upon completion of their sentences and the confiscation of all seized devices.
