42 policemen killed during student protests: IGP

More than 400 people, including students, were killed during the recent mass movement.

At least 42 members of Bangladesh Police were killed and numerous others were injured during the recent mass student protests, newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam said on Sunday (11 August).

Speaking to reporters at the Central Police Hospital in Dhaka, the IGP confirmed that among the deceased, three held the rank of inspector and two were members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

He said over 500 individuals received treatment at the hospital, with 27 still receiving care. "We are providing full support to the injured," the IGP added.

The recent student movement, which led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina's government, resulted in the deaths of more than 400 people, including students, primarily due to gunfire.
