University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah has tendered his resignation, citing health concerns.

Dr Shahidullah submitted his resignation letter to the Ministry of Education, despite having been out of the country for over a year on Sunday (11 August).

He is the brother of Kazi Zafrullah, a presidium member of the Awami League.

In his resignation letter, Dr Shahidullah explained that he had assumed the role of UGC Chairman on 28 May 2023, in accordance with a notification from the Ministry of Education.

However, due to health issues, he has been residing in Australia since 20 August of the previous year for medical treatment, following an office order from the Secondary and Higher Education Division.

Dr Shahidullah further said based on the advice of Australian specialists and considering his current physical condition, he is unable to continue fulfilling the responsibilities of the chairman.

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, there has been a spate of resignations across various sectors.

Following the recent resignations of the chief justice and the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Dr Shahidullah’s departure marks the latest in this trend.
