Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, economic and [lanning adviser to the interim government, said while the economy has slowed, it has not derailed.
“The pace of the economy has slowed, but it has not deviated from its course. Economic reform is needed,” he said during a press briefing at the Secretariat on Saturday (10 August).
The former Bangladesh Bank governor said restoring law and order is now the primary task, adding, “If the economy stagnates, it takes a lot of time to get it moving again, much like a vehicle. This puts pressure on the banks. Therefore, we aim to restore its momentum.”
He added, “We have been entrusted with a responsibility during this critical period. Our concern is the struggle of the country’s students and public. Our main task now is to ensure law and order. If we fail in this, problems will arise. Law and order encompass not only roads but also ensuring the smooth operation of banks and other essential services, which we are trying to address immediately.”
Regarding macroeconomic issues, including inflation, Dr. Ahmed assured that efforts will be made to tackle these problems promptly.
He also mentioned that there is ample employment opportunity in Bangladesh. “With proper leadership and management, I believe there will be no issues,” he said.
“We will work to create a smooth path for swift solutions and progress. Although we do not plan to stay for long, we aim to ensure that Bangladesh can move forward successfully.”
