Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has stepped down after a protest broke out at the Supreme Court premises demanding his resignation.

The chief justice submitted his resignation letter to President Mohammad Shahabuddin on Saturday afternoon, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul told the media.

The government has appointed Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam as the acting chief justice.

The appointment was confirmed by Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, the Supreme Court’s public relations officer, on Saturday (10 August).

The protesters issued an ultimatum to the chief justice and the judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm. The protesters also threatened to lay siege to their residences if their demands were not met.

In response to the protest, Chief Justice Hassan announced his decision to resign, saying that the decision is motivated by concerns for the safety of judges across the Supreme Court, High Court, and lower courts in the current climate.
