Regarding the demand for Chief Justice's resignation by protesting students, interim government's legal advisor Professor Asif Nazrul said he expects the Chief Justice to understand how to respect such a demand from a mass movement.
"After a call from the public movement, I wish to leave the decision of what the Chief Justice should do up to him," said Professor Asif Nazrul while talking to reporters at the Secretariat on Saturday, shortly after assuming his duties with the interim government.
Asif Nazrul said, “A significant mass movement has led to the top leader of the Awami League government, who had been entrenched for 16-17 years, having to flee. After such a call from this level, what the Chief Justice should do is up to him.”
Earlier, following the Chief Justice’s directive, a full court meeting was scheduled for 10:30am on Saturday via virtual platform. In connection with this, hundreds of students were seen gathering at the High Court premises around 11:45am.
Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement and advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, posted on his Facebook page earlier in the day. He demanded the Chief Justice’s unconditional resignation and the cancellation of the full court meeting.
In his post, Asif Mahmud stated, “The Chief Justice, who is involved in fascism and various wrongdoings, has called for a full court meeting without any discussions with the government. Any form of conspiracy from defeated forces will not be tolerated. Lawyers have already gathered in protest.”
He further wrote, “We had previously called for the Chief Justice’s resignation. If you provoke the student-public against them, you will face severe consequences. The Chief Justice should immediately resign unconditionally and cancel the full court meeting.”
