Gunfiring was heard during a clash between a section of prisoners and guards at Chattogram Central Jail.
The incident took place at around 2pm on Friday (9 August).
Residents of Nagorik Laldighi area said a tense situation was prevailing in the area due to the incident.
Jail guards opened fire to control the situation when a section of prisoners staged demonstrations and tried to break open a room at the jail, said officials.
A team of army men set off for the spot to control the situation.
According to several sources, some people gathered from outside the jail and tried to break the main gate of the jail. Soon after, the inmates inside rioted and clashed with the prison guards.
Chattogram Central Jail Senior Superintendent Manjur Hossain said, "Inmates tried to create some chaos inside. From what we understand, inmates are ariled up because prisoners arrested in the quota movement in other jails are getting bail but they are not. That is the main point."
Regarding the casualties, he said, there are some casualties.
"Some of our staff were injured. We are patiently monitoring the situation. No one from outside could enter inside and our prisoners could not escape. The army quickly arrived. We hope that if the army stays here for a few days, no situation will arise," the official said.
He also said that there are various types of convicts including war criminals and militants in the jail.
Among the prisoners, there are as many as 25 militants, as many as 150 Kuki-chin members including women and over a hundred death row convicts.
