Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League, will return to Bangladesh once democracy is restored in the country, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has said.

"My 76-year-old mother, Sheikh Hasina, will certainly return to Bangladesh. However, it remains undecided whether she will return as an active politician," said Joy during an exclusive telephone interview with Indian news agency PTI on Thursday ( 8 August).

Joy attributed the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh to the involvement of Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI.

He said, "Members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family will never abandon the people of Bangladesh or the Awami League."

Joy also expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for providing refuge to his mother, Sheikh Hasina.

Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister and left the country in the face of a mass student-led uprising.
