Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam has ordered all police officials to return to their respective offices within next 24 hours.
"Many police officials are not in their respective units. We want to start anew to ensure the security of the lives and property of the people. Therefore, everyone is instructed to return within the next 24 hours, that is, by the evening of Thursday (8 August)," IGP said during a press briefing on Wednesday at the police headquarters.
He stated, "We could not fulfill our responsibilities according to the expectations of the people regarding the justified movement of anti-discrimination students. So, many have become angry."
Acknowledging the operational mistakes in suppressing the student movement, the IGP said, "Many, including students, ordinary people, and police officers, have been killed. I apologise for everything as the IGP."
