Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is set to become the chief adviser to the interim government, will arrive in Bangladesh on Thursday.

He will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on the Emirates flight (EK-582) from Dubai at 2:10pm, said the Yunus Centre in a social media post on Wednesday (6 August).

Dr Muhammad Yunus has been agreed to be appointed the chief advisor to the interim government.

The decision came following a meeting between President Muhammed Shahabuddin, key organisers of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, chiefs of armed forces and other stakeholders at Bangabhaban on Tuesday (6 August).

The meeting comes in the wake of the resignation and fleeing of Sheikh Hasina in the face of a mass uprising against her and her Awami League government.

More than 100 people have been killed across the country in the rioting and mob violence that followed.

During the meeting at Bangabhaban, the representatives of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement proposed the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

President Shahabuddin expressed his agreement with their proposal.

He emphasised that the nation is currently undergoing a critical period and stressed the urgency of establishing an interim government as swiftly as possible to navigate through this crisis.

He also advised that the finalisation of other members of the advisory council should involve discussions with political parties.

Additionally, he recommended the inclusion of a freedom fighter in the interim government. The President called upon the nation to cooperate in overcoming this crisis.

The meeting was attended by General Waqar-uz-Zaman, Chief of Army Staff; Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, Chief of Air Staff; Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan, Chief of Naval Staff; Professor Asif Nazrul from the Department of Law at Dhaka University; Professor Tanzimuddin Khan from the Department of International Relations at Dhaka University; and thirteen coordinators from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
