The government has imposed a curfew in the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country which will be in effect from 6pm on Sunday (4 August), as well as general holiday from Monday (5 August) to Wednesday (7 August) by an executive order.
"As of Sunday, 4 August 2024, a curfew will be enforced starting from 6pm until further notice across Dhaka Metropolitan area and all divisional cities, city corporations, municipalities, industrial regions, district headquarters, and upazilas," said a notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday (4 August).
"Public Administration Ministry has issued a notification declaring the general holidays for 3 days on Sunday," Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain told Bangladesh First.
It comes as at least 9 people have been killed during nationwide clashes amid the protest led by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement demanding the resignation of the government and counter-rallies by the ruling Awami League.
The clashes erupted from around 11am on Sunday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has labelled those protesting as terrorists and urged the nation to act decisively.
"Those currently engaging in acts of sabotage are not students; they are terrorists," she said during the meeting of the National Committee on Security Affairs.
"I call upon the nation to suppress these terrorists with a firm hand," she added.
