The US has alerted its citizens currently residing in Bangladesh to remain vigilant and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the US Embassy in Bangladesh stated, “Due to the unpredictable nature of the protests and the government response, U.S. citizens should practice vigilance and avoid demonstrations and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings.”

The Embassy also noted that a peaceful “sit-in” might occur at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park, located in the diplomatic area of Gulshan 2. Therefore, it asked its diplomats to void the Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park from 12 today.

"Calls for protests, demonstrations, marches, and gatherings continue to occur and can often materialize quickly. We are also aware of calls for a 'total non-cooperation' movement beginning on Sunday, August 4. More protests are expected in the coming days," the post added.

The Embassy advised that if US citizens feel unsafe, they should consider returning to the United States. Bangladesh is currently under a Level 4 travel advisory of “Do Not Travel.”

The Embassy further advised US citizens to review their personal security plans, remain aware of their surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.
