The government is set to ban Bangladesh Jamaat-E-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, under the anti-terrorism act, and its official notification will be issued shortly, said Law Minister Anisul Huq.
"I have signed the Home Ministry's proposal to ban Jamaat's political activities. The Home Ministry will issue the notification within a short time," the minister said while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday (1 August).
This decision follows a unanimous agreement reached at a meeting of the 14-party alliance on Monday (29 July) to prohibit Jamaat's political activities.
On Wednesday (31 July), Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organisation, Islami Chhatra Shibir, will be banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 due to their involvement in violence and subversive activities surrounding the quota reform movement.
"Considering past terrorism, the demands of civil society, the demands of the 14-party alliance, and the recent events linked to Jamaat, we are taking this action. I can't disclose everything right now. The process is ongoing. You'll know once it's completed," the home minister said.
