Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has described social media as a "dangerous affair," noting that any critique of it often raises questions about the right to freedom of speech.

His comments came during a contempt of court hearing presided over by a five-member Appellate Bench, concerning six lawyers from the BNP on Thursday (1 August).

"Social media has now reached a state where it is a breeding ground for trouble. Any statement about social media invites scrutiny under the right to freedom of speech," he added.

During the hearing, BNP lawyers alleged that their statements were being distorted by the media.

In response, the chief justice firmly stated that the media bears no fault.

"What the media chooses to report is their prerogative," he asserted.
