Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organisation, Islami Chhatra Shibir, will be banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 due to their involvement in violence and subversive activities surrounding the quota reform movement.
At a press conference held at the Secretariat on Wednesday evening, he stated that the process to ban Jamaat-Shibir's politics is underway and a notification in this regard may be issued at any moment.
"Considering past terrorism, the demands of civil society, the demands of the 14-party alliance, and the recent events linked to Jamaat, we are taking this action. I can't disclose everything right now. The process is ongoing. You'll know once it's completed," the home minister said.
On Monday (29 July), the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League reached a consensus on banning Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following this, on Tuesday, Law Minister Anisul Huq said that the government would issue an executive order to ban Jamaat and finalise the legal process by Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the Home Minister confirmed that the action would be taken under the authority of Article 18 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
