High Court has expressed deep sorrow over the violence and deaths amid the student protests demanding reform in the quota system

The High Court (HC) has expressed profound regret over the violence and fatalities amid the student protests demanding reform in the quota system for government jobs.

An HC bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice S M Masud Hossain Dolon made this statement during a hearing of a writ petition on Tuesday (30 July).

The petition sought directives against shooting at protesters and the release of six coordinators of the anti-quota movement from Detective Branch's custody.

"None of us are fulfilling our duties in accordance with the Constitution. We must refrain from actions that harm the nation. Both human lives and state property are of paramount importance," the HC said.

The petition was argued in court by Barrister Sara Hossain, Advocate ZI Khan Panna, Barrister Anik R Haque, and Advocate Manzur Al Matin Pritom.

Representing the state were Additional Attorney General S M Munir, Additional Attorney General Sheikh Md Morshed, and Additional Attorney General Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury.

The writ petition was filed on Monday (29 July) by Supreme Court lawyers Manzur Al Matin Pritom and Ainunnahar Siddika Lipi.

The Cabinet Secretary, the Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and other relevant parties have been named as respondents in the petition.
