Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has condemned the government's actions as "barbaric and cowardly," accusing authorities of utilising extreme measures to suppress dissent.
“The information coming through various means is truly horrifying and a clear violation of human rights. The government's abuse and torture of detainees is barbaric and cowardly. We call for an immediate end to these repressive actions,” Fakhrul said in a statement released today.
The statement reads, “The repeated remanding and inhuman torture are against the constitution. There are specific Supreme Court guidelines on this matter. The blanket remands given by lower courts are entirely illegal. I call for an end to remands.”
The crackdown includes the detention of BNP Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Ganaadhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who are currently under a five-day remand.
Both face allegations of severe mistreatment, according to the statement.
The statement also mentions former BRAC University teacher Asif Mahtab as missing after his detainment by authorities.
Fakhrul also condemned the alleged alteration of autopsy reports and the intimidation of families of the deceased, saying, “Families of the injured and deceased are being intimidated by law enforcement, and many victim families have complained that the autopsy reports of the deceased are being altered at the government’s direction.”
