Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought Japan's assistance to quickly reopen the Mirpur-10 and Kazipara metro stations in Dhaka, which were damaged during the violence surrounding the quota reform movement.

During a meeting at Ganabhaban on Saturday (27 July), the Prime Minister made this request to the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Iwama Kiminori.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister's Press Secretary, Mohammad Naimul Islam Khan, briefed journalists about the discussion.

The Japanese Ambassador said they would first assess the damage to the metro stations and then decide how Japan can assist Bangladesh in making the stations operational again.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, announced that it will not be possible to reopen the two damaged metro stations within a year.

Quader said, “The absence of the metro rail is causing immense suffering to people. A 30-minute journey is now taking up to two hours. It is difficult to specify when the metro rail service will resume.”
