Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said it will not be possible to reopen the two metro stations damaged during the quota reform movement within a year.
"Kazipara and Mirpur-10 metro stations have been destroyed amid the violence surrounding the movement. Experts have indicated that it will take more than a year to procure the necessary equipment and make the stations operational again," said Quader on Saturday (July 27) after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the damaged Setu Bhaban in Mohakhali, Dhaka.
Quader said, “The absence of the metro rail is causing immense suffering to people. A 30-minute journey is now taking up to two hours. It is difficult to specify when the metro rail service will resume.”
When asked about the timeline for the resumption of metro rail services, Quader replied, “We will follow the decisions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She is closely monitoring everything and has visited various damaged sites, including BTV. She has a comprehensive assessment of the damages. At this moment, I cannot say when or which parts will be operational.”
Quader further commented, “This destruction was not the work of ordinary students. The BNP-Jamaat alliance has hijacked the movement with their political motives to cover up their long-standing failures. They failed in 2018, they failed in October before the elections, and fearing electoral defeat, they did not participate. Now, their greed for power has driven them to this point.”
