People who were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital after being injured during the quota reform protests are quietly leaving the hospital without informing the authorities due to the fear of arrest. As a result, the hospital records still show their names, but their beds are empty.
This information was gathered from various wards of the hospital between 11:00am and 1:00pm on Thursday (25 July).
Relatives of the patients said the police are collecting information on those injured by gunfire during the violence, leading many to leave the hospital in fear of arrest.
After visiting the hospital, it was found that strict measures have been imposed on entering each ward. Only the relatives of patients are allowed to enter, following the directives of the authorities. Ansar members on duty stated that they are under instructions to only allow patient relatives into the wards.
When asked about admissions and deaths, Brigadier General Asaduzzaman, the director of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said that a total of 278 people are currently admitted in various wards of the hospital. In the past few days, the death toll has reached 79.
Regarding the professional identities of the injured and deceased, he said, "This information cannot be provided at the moment. We are currently focused on providing care to the patients."
