The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has called for the waiver of port and shipping demurrage charges to mitigate the financial losses faced by importers and exporters due to the ongoing unrest and internet shutdown across the country.
FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam made the demand to the government today (24 July) in a media release.
The FBCCI has also urged that these charges not be imposed for 15 days following the normalisation of port clearing activities.
Port and shipping demurrage charges are fees imposed on cargo that remains at a port or on a vessel beyond the allotted free time for loading or unloading.
Port activities were halted for several days due to the countrywide internet service disruption and unrest surrounding the quota reform movement.
