Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged students to remain patient and wait for the verdict from the highest court regarding the ongoing quota reform movement.
The Prime Minister made this appeal during a national address on Wednesday (17 July) at 7:30pm, following the deaths of six people, including students, amid clashes between quota reform protesters, police, and the ruling party's student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
"I request all to be patient until the verdict. I believe students will get the right verdict," she hoped.
PM also announced that a judicial probe committee will be formed to investigate the killings during the quota protests.
"What happened is unacceptable in any way. Many innocent lives were lost unnecessarily. It is extremely painful," she stated.
"The incidents surrounding the quota reform movement are heartbreaking. What happened is unacceptable in any way. This was not desirable in any manner," she added.
The address was broadcast simultaneously on Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and various private TV channels and radio stations.
The ongoing quota reform movement took a violent turn yesterday (Tuesday), resulting in the deaths of six people. Hundreds of protesting students and members of the BCL were injured in clashes across the country.
In response to the escalating violence, the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have announced the closure of schools, colleges, and universities across the country and ordered students to vacate their dormitories.
