Quota protest: 6 killed in Dhaka, Ctg, Rangpur

Three people were killed in Chattogram and one each in Dhaka and Rangpur.

At least six people including students were killed across the country as clashes erupted between quota reform protesters, the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and the police. 

In Chattogram, three individuals, including a student of Chattogram College, were killed in a clash between quota reform protesters and members of the Chhatra League and Juba League in Chattogram.

Confirming the news to the media, CMCH Director Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin said the bodies have been kept in the Chattogram Medical College and Hospital morgue. 

The victims are Wasim Akram, 23, a third year student of Sociology Department in Dhaka College and Faruq from Cumilla, who used to work at a furniture shop in Chattogram.

The identity of other victim could not be immediately confirmed.

Additionally, at least eight people who were injured during the clash are receiving treatment at CMCH.

In Dhaka, one suspected to be a street vendor was killed after falling in the midst of a quota reform protest in front of Dhaka College on Tuesday.

Pedestrians took him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Eyewitnesses say quota reform protesters beat him as he came across their protest.

Another person, approximately 25 years old, was killed in the conflict in the science lab area. Mohammad Ali, an ambulance driver from Dhanmondi Popular Hospital, transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead.

DMCH Police Outpost In-Charge Bacchu Miah confirmed the deaths, citing doctors in charge.

In Rangpur, a student from Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur lost his life during a violent clash between police and protesters advocating for quota reforms on the campus.

The deceased, identified as 25-year-old Abu Sayeed, was a student in the English Department and one of the principal organisers of the quota reform movement at the university.

"A student was killed, but we are yet to determine the exact cause of his death," said Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman.

According to the police, a group of students began demonstrating on campus and were soon joined by students from nearby educational institutions at around 2:30pm on Tuesday (16 July).
