The universal pension scheme, Pratyay, for public university teachers will be effective from July next year, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Saturday (13 July).

"All employees of government and autonomous institutions, including public university teachers, will be included in the universal pension scheme, Pratyay, starting from 1 July 2025," said Quader during the meeting with the delegation of protesting university teachers at Awami League President's Dhanmondi office.

There had been an announcement that public university teachers would join the pension scheme from 1 July 2024, but this was incorrect, he added.

Quader said, “We have listened to their demands, which include the formation of a super grade for university teachers. We will communicate these demands to the highest authorities, and a final decision will be made after further discussion.”

During the meeting, Quader urged the teachers to withdraw their protest. The delegation representing the protesting teachers said they would make a decision after consulting with the federation.

A 10-member delegation attended the meeting with Quader, including University Teachers Association Federation Secretary General Professor Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, Dhaka University Teachers Association General Secretary Professor Zinat Huda, and Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahim.

Among those present on the government side were Prime Minister’s Advisor on Education and Culture Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Deputy Minister for Education Shamsunnahar Chapa, Awami League Joint General Secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and Awami League Office Secretary and Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Biplab Barua.
