Anti-quota movement: Students protest blocking highways and rail lines

Students of Dhaka University and its affiliated colleges blocked the Shahbagh intersection to press their one-point demand for the abolition of illogical and irrelevant quotas in all grades of government jobs through legislation in parliament. 

They are also seeking justice for the attacks on students at Comilla University (CoU), Chittagong University (CU), and Rajshahi University (RU) by police during yesterday’s blockade programmes.

Under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, hundreds of students gathered at the DU central library at 4:00 pm, proceeding with processions from various halls and DU-affiliated colleges. They marched through several locations, including the central library, Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, VC Chattar, TSC, and Shahbagh.

The protesters have called for a nationwide protest procession. After the end of Thursday's blockade programme at 9 pm, Nahidul Islam Nahid, one of the coordinators of the protest, announced that students will stage demonstration processions on all university campuses across the country at 4pm on Friday (July 12) to protest the attacks on agitating students during yesterday’s blockade programmes.

Several thousand students from Rajshahi University took position on the rail line adjacent to the university, bringing out a procession from the campus. Due to the blockade, the rail connection between Rajshahi and the rest of the country was disrupted.

Chittagong University:

Students of Chittagong University gathered at the 2 No. Gate rail line, blocking rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram. They traveled approximately 22 kilometers to the city via a shuttle train to attend the protest rally. 

Jagannath University

Students from Jagannath University staged a protest rally in response to the recent police brutality against students nationwide during the ‘Bangla Blockade’ on Thursday.

The demonstration began in the afternoon in front of the university’s Arts Building. The students marched from the campus, circling Victoria Park, and then gathered at the main gate of the campus. The protest caused huge traffic disruptions in the Sadarghat area.

Meanwhile, Khulna University students are staging a demonstration on the highways adjacent to the university’s main entrance gate, Bijoy Toran.

Students from several universities and colleges are also protesting, demanding the logical reformation of the quota system and seeking justice for the attacks on students’ demonstrations.
