Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen has said a specialized 150-bed Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit is being established at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) to provide medical services for burn patients.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina might lay the foundation for the specialized unit upon her return from a visit to China later this month, said the health minister during his visit to the proposed hospital site in Chattogram on Saturday.

“This is a priority project for the Prime Minister,” Dr Samanta Lal told journalists after inspecting the area. “Construction is set to begin in September, with plans to complete the work within two years.”

The 150-bed specialized Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit will cost Tk285 crore to build. Of this, the Chinese government will provide Tk180 crore as a grant, while the remaining Tk105 crore will be funded by the Government of Bangladesh.

The project received approval during the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on 9 May. The specialized unit will include 20 burn ICU beds, five of which will be designated for children, 25 HDU beds, and three state-of-the-art operating theaters. To facilitate patient access, three roads will be constructed.

The six-story unit will feature an emergency ward and OPD on the first floor, three operating theaters and an ICU on the second floor, an HDU on the third floor, general wards on the fourth and fifth floors, and office spaces alongside wards on the sixth floor.
