Keir Starmer has appointed Rachel Reeves as Britain’s first female Chancellor of the Exchequer in his new cabinet.

Reeves, a former Bank of England economist, played a crucial role in Labour's campaign, restoring economic credibility following Jeremy Corbyn's tenure, reports The Independent.

She is the first female to hold the second most important role in government in 708 years.

Angela Rayner has been appointed Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities, succeeding Michael Gove.

Rayner, who will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister, only the second woman to hold the role after Therese Coffey in Liz Truss’ 49-day government.

Just 24 hours before the polls opened, Keir remained coy about his top appointments, refusing to guarantee any roles in interviews.

This cautious approach was a response to Neil Kinnock's 1992 mishap, when he announced his cabinet prematurely at an infamous rally in Sheffield, only to lose the election.

Key figures from the shadow cabinet, including David Lammy, Wes Streeting, Bridget Phillipson, Yvette Cooper, and Pat McFadden, have now been confirmed in prominent roles.

David Lammy has been confirmed as Foreign Secretary after speculation the role could go to another experienced MP, including the newly returned Douglas Alexander.

Yvette Cooper, who previously shadowed the role, has been named Home Secretary.

John Healy is appointed as Defence Secretary, while Pat McFadden, rewarded for his success as campaign coordinator, will run the Cabinet Office as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, often described as the engine room of government.

Wes Streeting, who narrowly retained his east London seat, is the new Health Secretary.

Bridget Phillipson becomes Education Secretary after being the first MP elected on the night in Sunderland South.

Shabana Mahmood, overcoming a challenge from a pro-Gaza independent in Birmingham Ladywood, is named Justice Secretary.

Ed Miliband, a former Labour leader, is appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, signalling Starmer’s commitment to climate change initiatives despite scaling back on a £28 billion green plan.

The reshuffle also necessitates filling vacancies left by Thangam Debbonaire, who lost her seat to the Greens, and Jonathan Ashworth, who was defeated by a pro-Gaza independent.

Darren Jones, the effective Shadow Chief Treasury Secretary, is expected to receive a prominent role following these changes.
