Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, a prominent figure in Bangladeshi chess, has tragically passed away during the 12th round of the National Chess Championship at the Bangladesh Chess Federation.
Zia was competing against fellow Grandmaster Enamul Hossain Rajib when he collapsed at 5:52pm on Friday.
The match, which began at 3pm , was halted as Ziaur suddenly fell to the ground. His opponent, along with other participants, immediately rushed to assist him.
He was quickly transported to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Shahbagh, arriving within nine minutes.
Despite the prompt medical response, doctors were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at 7:20pm.
Sources from the Chess Federation revealed that medical personnel could not detect Ziaur's pulse for approximately 15 minutes.
It is believed he had died before reaching the hospital.
Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, born on May 1, 1974, was a respected and influential figure in the chess community.
Upon receiving the devastating news at the hospital, the deceased's wife was overwhelmed with grief, and efforts to console her proved futile.
Many of Rahman’s peers also broke down in tears, mourning the loss of their esteemed colleague.
