The Bangladesh High Commission in London has conveyed a congratulatory message from Bangladesh's Prime Minister to the newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after Keir Starmer's Labour Party's historic victory in the July 4th elections.

In the letter, the Bangladesh Prime Minister expressed, “This unequivocal mandate clearly testifies to the trust and confidence of the British people in your leadership to take your country to newer heights of progress and prosperity and promote peace globally.”

Reflecting on the enduring relationship between the two nations, the Prime Minister reminisced about Bangladesh's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and his party Awami League’s friendship with the Labour Party.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significant support from leaders such as Sir Harold Wilson, Thomas Williams KC, and Lord Peter Shore during Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971.

This support, the Prime Minister noted, helped shape “Bangladesh-UK relations founded on our common values of democracy, secularism, and inclusive and progressive aspirations.”

The letter also emphasised the potential for future collaboration under the new Labour Government.

“My Government looks forward to working closely with the Labour Government under your able stewardship in further strengthening our long-standing political, economic, climate, and strategic partnerships in the mutual interest of our two Commonwealth nations,” the Prime Minister stated.

The Prime Minister underscored the contributions of the Bangladeshi-British diaspora, numbering over 700,000, as a vital link in fostering mutual prosperity.

“Together we would continue to harness the invaluable contributions of more than 700,000 vibrant and enterprising Bangladeshi-British Diaspora to the common good of our two nations,” the letter remarked.

Concluding the letter, the Bangladesh Prime Minister extended best wishes to the UK Prime Minister, stating, “May I wish you the very best of health, happiness, and success in this high responsibility and peace, progress, and prosperity to the friendly people of the United Kingdom.”
