A Dhaka court has ordered the confiscation of 866 decimals of land and four flats belonging to Motiur Rahman who has been recently removed from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for his alleged corruption, and his family.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Jaglul Hossain issued the order on Thursday (4 July), following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC stated in the petition, "It has been learned that the accused Matiur Rahman and his family members are attempting to transfer their immovable property. If they succeed, the continuity of the investigation, filing of the case, submission of the charge sheet to the court, and subsequent confiscation of the property acquired through corrupt means as part of the sentence imposed by the court will all be futile.
"Therefore, in the interest of a thorough investigation and the establishment of justice, it is essential to seize the immovable property to facilitate the filing of the case, completion of the investigation, submission of the charge sheet to the court, and eventual confiscation of the property by the government after the court's judgment."
A three-member committee from the ACC has commenced an investigation into the assets of Motiur Rahman. He was transferred to the Internal Resources Division of the Ministry of Finance on 23 June.
The issue gained public attention when Matiur Rahman's son, Ifat, bought a goat for Tk15 lakh from Sadeeq Agro in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. The purchase led to scrutiny of Matiur Rahman's movable and immovable assets, bank deposits, and details of income and expenditures.
The ACC is investigating these matters, and the NBR has also decided to review the information provided in his tax returns.
