India’s Adani power plant, which supplies electricity to Bangladesh via Rahanpur in Chapainawabganj, has ceased production due to maintenance and a technical fault, which may cause a power shortage in Bangladesh.

The coal-fired power plant in Godda, Jharkhand, supplies around 1,500 megawatts of electricity from its two units to Bangladesh. One unit was already closed for routine maintenance before the Eid-ul-Adha holidays, and the second unit was forced to shut down due to a mechanical failure. This is likely to result in a complete halt in power generation and supply to Bangladesh.

Sources at the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) said that due to low demand during the Eid holidays, Adani Power had shut down the first unit for maintenance. The unit is scheduled to return to production on 5 July.

The sudden shutdown of the second unit has created a significant shortfall in power supply in Bangladesh.

Additionally, a unit with a 622 MW capacity at the Payra Power Plant has been closed for maintenance since 25 June, exacerbating the situation and leading to load shedding in rural areas outside Dhaka.
