PM Hasina likely to visit China on 8 July

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit Beijing on a four-day trip from 8 to 11 July, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said on Monday (24 June).

"The initial decision for the visit has been made, with the Prime Minister set to travel to China from 8-11 July," Hasan Mahmud told reporters following a courtesy meeting with Liu Jianchao, the Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China.

The foreign minister said, "We anticipate that several agreements and memorandums of understanding will be signed during the Prime Minister's visit to China. These could serve as significant milestones in the relationship between the two countries."

Hasan Mahmud further mentioned that discussions were held with the visiting representatives of the Communist Party of China regarding the increase in production and trade. He emphasized that China wishes to support Bangladesh on its path toward achieving its vision of a Smart Bangladesh. Additionally, discussions were held to address the trade deficit.

During the meeting, Bangladesh also sought China's cooperation in the repatriation of Rohingya refugees. Liu Jianchao acknowledged the growing difficulty of accommodating the Rohingya and pledged China's support to Bangladesh in this matter.
