Around 50 lakh people of the country are involved in online gambling, State Minister for Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak said on Monday (24 June).
Expressing concern about the matter, Palak said a comprehensive operation will be initiated against gambling that takes place using electronic devices like mobile phones.
People of various ages, including retirees, have become involved in online gambling, said the state minister, adding that the government is making vigorous efforts to shut down illegal online gambling and betting sites.
He said 2,600 sites of this kind have already been closed and technological capability is being strengthened to ensure that the closed sites are not reopened.
The minister also advocates for enacting stringent laws to check online gambling.
Earlier, the state minister paid a courtesy visit to Marie Masdupuy, the French Ambassador to Dhaka, at the Secretariat.
Regarding this, he said Bangladesh is considering France's offer of assistance in establishing satellite technology.
Additionally, there have been progressive discussions with the country about the proposal to sell Airbus, he added.
