Heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream have caused a continuous rise in the water levels of major rivers in Kurigram.

The water levels of the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers have already surpassed the danger mark.

The low-lying areas of Kurigram may experience flooding within the next 48 hours, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Water Development Board (WDB).

Meanwhile, the rising water levels have triggered erosion in several areas of the Teesta basin, particularly in the Vidyananda Union of Rajarhat upazila.

Without preventive measures from the WDB, many families affected by the erosion have started relocating their homes.

At least one government primary school, a local market, and over a hundred families are under threat from the erosion.

The WDB's control room in Kurigram said water levels are rising in all the rivers of the district.

From 6am on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday, the water level of the Dudhkumar River at Pateshwari Point rose by 31 centimeters, flowing 9 centimeters above the danger mark.

The Teesta River at Kaunia Point increased by 38 centimeters, flowing 15 centimeters above the danger mark.

During the same period, the water level of the Dharla River at Kurigram (Dharla Bridge) Point rose by 47 centimeters, and the Brahmaputra River at Chilmari Point increased by 42 centimeters, approaching the danger mark.
