Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana said this year's leather preservation management during Eid-ul-Azha has been more environmentally friendly than ever before.
“The recommendations and action plans developed by the 'Task Force for the Development of the Tannery Industry' and the intensive monitoring and supervision by the industries and commerce ministries have made this possible,” said the secretary during her visit to the BSCIC Leather Industrial City in Hemayetpur, Savar, Dhaka.
The visit aimed to observe firsthand whether the leather preservation management and directives of the Task Force related to the leather industry were being properly implemented during Eid-ul-Azha.
During her visit, the Senior Industry Secretary said, "This time, the CETP (Central Effluent Treatment Plant) of BSCIC Leather Industrial City has been fully prepared and made operational. All its modules have been overhauled, thoroughly inspected, and refurbished. Liquid waste has been treated with the necessary chemicals. Moreover, the biological treatment system is operational. It has been ensured that no tannery waste reaches the CETP without primary treatment."
Zakia Sultana also mentioned that around ten million animals are sacrificed in the country every year during Eid-ul-Adha, and another ten million are needed throughout the year. To ensure the proper and environmentally friendly preservation of a total of twenty million pieces of leather, two additional CETPs will be constructed: one in Chittagong and another in Dhaka.
