State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare, Overseas and Employment Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury said that the Oman government has assured Bangladesh of legalising 96,000 illegal Bangladeshi workers.

The state minister made the disclosure while talking to journalists yesterday (11 June) at his office in the city’s Eskaton.

“96,000 workers are living illegally in Oman,” said Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury.

Shofiqur recently visited Dubai, Oman, and Qatar to resolve the labour market issue.

“The Oman government will charge a penalty for their legalisation but Bangladesh has requested them not to charge the penalty,” said the state minister.

“The Oman government has assured us of taking more skilled workers from Bangladesh in 12 categories,” he said.

Dubai has already placed a demand for 3,000 workers, he said, adding that against their demand, 400 workers have already left and 500 workers are under process to leave.

Replying to journalists’ query about labour market in Malaysia, Shofiqur said the ministry has already formed a probe committee which has been given five more working days to submit report.

The report will explain why some 16,970 migrant workers were not able to go to Malaysia despite getting BMET clearance, he added.
