A Dhaka court on Sunday (9 June) granted a 7-day remand against Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Babu, Secretary for Relief and Social Welfare of the District Awami League, in connection with the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mehdi Hasan passed the order after a hearing.
Earlier, on Thursday night (6 June), a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) arrested Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Babu from the Adarshapara area of Jhenaidah town. Babu is the cousin of Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the alleged mastermind behind MP Anar's murder.
The investigating officer produced Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Babu before the court seeking a 10-day remand against him.
MP Anwarul Azim traveled to Kolkata on 12 May. The next day, he was murdered in a flat in the Sanjiva Gardens area of New Town, Kolkata. Based on CCTV footage and other information from the flat, Kolkata police informed the Bangladesh police of the incident.
Following this, Dhaka detectives arrested Shimul Bhuiyan, Tanvir Bhuiyan, and Shilasti Rahman.
During interrogation, police obtained detailed information about the murder and the disposal of Anwarul Azim’s body.
Investigating officers revealed that after the murder, Anwarul Azim's body was dismembered and packed into bags, some parts of which were dumped in a canal in Kolkata.
