The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has scheduled a new date of 23 June for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed to appear for questioning.
ACC Secretary Khorhsheda Yasmin announced this at a press conference held at the ACC headquarters on Thursday afternoon.
She said despite a previous summons related to allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, former IGP Benazir Ahmed did not attend the hearing. Consequently, the ACC has now set June 23 as the new date for his appearance.
On 28 May, the ACC issued a notice to Benazir Ahmed and his family members, seeking their presence for questioning. Benazir was asked to appear on 6 June, while his wife and children were summoned for 9 June.
However, on Wednesday, Benazir's lawyer requested an additional 15 days for his client to appear. The request was submitted to the ACC's Deputy Director.
The ACC has reportedly found that Benazir Ahmed and his family own 621 bighas of land in various districts including Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Dhaka. They also possess four flats in Dhaka's Gulshan area, 33 bank accounts, shares in 19 companies, three beneficiary owner's (BO) accounts for stock trading, and savings certificates worth Tk30 lakh. Following the ACC's petition, the court has ordered the seizure of these assets.
Sources indicate that Benazir Ahmed left the country on 4 May, just before the court issued the seizure order.
