Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasised the need to develop the capability to withstand and overcome disasters.
“Disasters will come, but we must attain the capability to survive and fight against them. This is the goal of the Awami League,” said the Prime Minister while distributing relief among people affected by Cyclone Remal in Kolapara, Patuakhali, on Thursday.
“There have been disasters in the country in the past, but nobody stood by the affected people,” said the Prime Minister, adding that her party and the government will always support those in need and extend all kinds of assistance to them.
Sheikh Hasina said, “The ruling Awami League has been working towards changing the destiny of the people, and this has been possible due to the continuity of democracy in the country.”
She added, “Peace has been established in the coastal region due to the Awami League being elected to power. Many parties came to power in the past but could not achieve this.”
The Prime Minister assured, “Nobody in the coastal area will remain landless. The Awami League government has built houses for everyone living in the coastal region, and not a single house was damaged in the cyclone.”
She also noted that work to repair damaged roads and dams in the cyclone-affected areas has already begun. “We will build disaster-resilient houses for the people in the coastal areas,” she added.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday flew by a helicopter over Mathbaria and Pathorghata areas in Patuakhali district to get a bird's eye view of the devastation caused by this week's Cyclone Remal.
Mathbaria and Pathorghata in Kalapara were among the hardest-hit areas when the cyclone roaring from the Bay of Bengal hit the Bangladesh coast on Sunday.
The prime minister's helicopter at some points flew just above the ground so she can have a better view of the damages caused by the cyclone that triggered tidal surges and torrential rains washing away beribadhs, fish farms, felling houses in trees along the coast.
It also left at least 13 people dead and many injured amid huge evacuation of people to cyclone shelters in an operation constantly monitored by the prime minister from Dhaka.
The helicopter carrying the PM landed at the helipad adjoining Khepupara Govt Model Secondary School, Kalapara of Patukhali district at 12:20pm after around one and a half hours of ride from Dhaka.
PM Hasina is scheduled to sit with the divisional level officials to review the relief operation and assess the immediate rehabitation needs of the affected people.
Wrapping up her day-long programme to the area Hasina is scheduled to leave for Dhaka at 3 pm, according to her office.
