Harun-Ar-Rashid will succeed M Khurshid Hossain from 5 June, who is set to retire

Barrister Md Harun-Ar-Rashid, currently the additional inspector general of police, has been appointed as the new Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Bangladesh's elite anti-crime unit.

The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the appointment in a notification signed by Md Mahabur Rahman Sheikh. 

The new role will be effective from 5 June.

Harun-Ar-Rashid will succeed M Khurshid Hossain, who is set to retire. 

A separate announcement stated that Khurshid Hossain will receive retirement benefits according to government rules.

Barrister Md Harun-Ar-Rashid hailed from Mollahkandi village in Sirajdikhan of Munshiganj. 

He is currently the Additional IGP (Human Resource Management) at the Police Headquarters and was previously the DIG of the Mymensingh Range.

Harun completed his MSc in Statistics from the University of Dhaka in 1994, an LLB from the University of London in 2009, and an MBA from the University of Dhaka in 2016.

Harun-Ar-Rashid's father, Ahmed Ali, was a businessman. He is the sixth of seven siblings. 

He began his career in 1995 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) through the 15th BCS Police Cadre.
