An appeal has been made to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), seeking the initiation of an investigation into the corruption allegations against former army chief Aziz Ahmed.

Supreme Court lawyer Salah Uddin Regan filed the appeal with the ACC on Wednesday (May 29).

Confirming the news, the lawyer said he will file a writ at the High Court in the public interest if the ACC does not take any steps regarding the appeal.

The US recently imposed sanctions on Aziz Ahmed over his alleged involvement in corruption, restricting the entry of the former army chief and his family members to the country.

In a statement on May 20, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said Aziz Ahmed’s activities led to the degradation of Bangladesh’s democratic institutions and a reduction in public trust in state organisations and apparatus.

The statement also noted that Aziz Ahmed helped his brother escape accountability for his criminal activities by resorting to corruption.

Additionally, it said Aziz Ahmed worked closely with his brother to help them secure military contracts and took bribes in exchange for recruitment into government posts.
