The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has asked to hoist danger signal 7 at the Payra and Mongla maritime ports as the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclone Remal this evening.
Meteorologist Tariful Nawaz Kabir from the Met Office confirmed that the low pressure in the east-central Bay and adjoining west-central Bay developed into a cyclone at around 6pm today (25 May).
Meanwhile, the ports of Chattogram and Cox's Bazar have been instructed to display danger signal 6.
“At 6pm, Cyclone Remal was located 365 kilometres from Payra port, 405 kilometres from Mongla port, 400 kilometres from Cox's Bazar, and 455 kilometres from Chittagong port,” said Kabir.
Following the cyclone's formation, rainfall has already started since the evening in various coastal areas, including Bhola and Pirojpur.
Six districts advised to be particularly prepared
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has directed six districts to be particularly prepared to tackle the cyclone.
These districts are Satkhira, Bagerhat, Khulna, Barguna, Patuakhali, and Bhola.
State Minister Mohibbur Rahman announced this directive during a meeting held by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief this morning.
"In the last 15 years, under the close supervision and directives during all disasters, including cyclones, we have been able to take timely preparations to alleviate human suffering and minimise loss of life and property. We are prepared to tackle this cyclone with the same efficiency," the state minister said.
