"If you visit Anar's electoral area, you will see how many people are mourning his death. Awami League awarded him the nomination because of his popularity," Quader said.

In response to media reports alleging Anwarul Azim Anar's criminal background, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader criticised the media for labeling Anwarul Azim Anar as a smuggler based on Indian news outlets.

"Anar was elected from Jhenaidah-4 (Kaliganj) constituency three times. If he was a criminal, why didn’t the journalists of our country find out before?" questioned Quader during the orientation programme for the members of Awami League’s newly formed Youth and Sports Sub-Committee in Tejgaon, Dhaka on Thursday (May 23).

"His position in the Awami League is not a significant factor. If you visit his electoral area, you will see how many people are mourning his death. Awami League awarded him the nomination because of his popularity," Quader added.

He further said, "We cannot be certain of his involvement in crime until the investigation is complete. However, our Prime Minister shows zero tolerance against crimes. If any party member is found involved in criminal activities, they are not spared. However, the allegations must be proven first."
