Jhenaidah-4 (Kaliganj) lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar has been murdered by killers hired for Tk 5 crore by his childhood friend and business partner Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen.
An officer of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police made the disclosure on Wednesday (22 May).
According to DB sources, Akhtaruzzaman, a Bangladeshi origin US citizen, hired killers for Tk 5 crore to kill his friend MP Anwarul Azim Anar at a flat in Kolkata of India.
Alleged terrorist Aman Ullah Aman led the killing mission, said sources at DB.
Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen is a resident of Jhenaidah and also a US citizen. Shaheen's brother is the mayor of Kotchandpur municipality in Jhenaidah.
Another friend and extremist leader, Amanullah Aman, was assigned with planning and executing the murder. Shaheen came to Bangladesh after drawing the final blue print of the murder sitting in Kolkata. Later, six people, including Aman, called MP Azim by trapping him in a flat, Sanjiva Gardens.
He was then taken hostage and strangled to death. Later, the body was cut into pieces and put in a trolley bag at an unknown location.
Meanwhile, Wari Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested three people - Amanullah Aman, Mostafiz and Faisal - on suspicion of involvement in the murder.
During interrogation, Aman said that Aktaruzzaman Shaheen wanted to pay him Tk5 crore to kill MP Anar. He was paid some money before the murder and the rest of the money was supposed to be paid after the killing mission.
On arrival in Dhaka from India, Aman was hiding in his sister's residence in the city’s Mohammadpur from where he was arrested, said DB officials.
On 30 April, Aman went to Kolkata with his girlfriend Silisti Rahman. They stayed at a duplex flat in Sanjiva Garden of Newtown area of Kolkata, which had been rented in advance. Shaheen's two associates - Siam and Jihad - were already staying in Kolkata. Later, they plotted plan to kill MP Anar. On 10 May, Shaheen returned to Dhaka after finalising the killing plot. As per plan, two hired killers - Faisal Shaji and Mostafiz - went to Kolkata on 11 May and joined Aman.
During quizzing, Aman told the intelligence officers that Shaheen had already knew that MP Annar would go to Kolkata on 12 May. He asked his gang to make all preparations to kill Anar. They also collected multiple locally made sharp weapons.
On 12 May, Anar went to Kolkata through Darshana border at Chuadanga. On the first day, he stayed at his friend Gopal's house in Kolkata. The following day, MP Anar was called to the flat at Sanjiva Garden in Newtown by the killers.
