Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said on Wednesday three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, who was found dead in Kolkata.
“Three people have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with the killing of MP Anar. Details will be disclosed later,” said the minister while speaking to reporters at his Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka.
He said, “The Indian police have informed us about his death. The motive behind the killing is not yet known."
The body of MP Anar was recovered from a flat in New Town, Kolkata, eight days after he went to India for medical treatment on May 11.
Anar's personal assistant Abdur Rauf told the media that he kept in touch with his family and party members for the first two days. However, he added, all communication with him has been lost since May 14, and his WhatsApp number was unreachable.
Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of the Awami League, was elected as the MP for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency in 2014, 2018, and 2024, serving three consecutive terms.
