The US sanction against former army chief Retd Gen Aziz Ahmed is evidence of the corruption within the Awami League government, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday (May 21).
“Corruption has grasped the government and democratic institutions in the country. There is no reason to be happy over the sanction against former army chief Aziz because none will save our democracy. The US has its sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) too,” said Fakhrul.
He said this at a discussion on the death anniversary of Shafiul Alam at the Dhaka Reporters Unity, Dhaka.
Fakhrul said, “The government has pushed the economy to the brink of collapse with its corruption increasing, keeping pace with the inflation.”
He added, “The Awami League has significantly lost public support over the last 15 years, which is why they are afraid of holding a free and fair election.”
Fakhrul said political vendetta can never bring welfare to the country. “We have to rescue our democracy ourselves; whatever others say or do does not matter to us.”
At that time, he expressed his firm determination to intensify the movement against the government.
Fakhrul said, “The Awami League is contesting among themselves in the absence of people's participation. People boycotted these elections as they know it will not establish their rights.”
