US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu will arrive in Dhaka today (14 May) in a two-day official visit.
During this visit, the US diplomat will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Affairs Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.
Lu will also meet with government officials, civil society leaders, and other Bangladeshis to discuss US-Bangladesh cooperation, including on addressing the climate crisis and deepening economic ties, according to the spokesperson at the US Department of State.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Masud Momen said all elements of the mutual relations - political, economic and even security issues will be tabled in the discussion.
After the 7 January national elections, the US in a statement on 8 January said, "Looking ahead, the United States remains committed to partnering with Bangladesh to advance our shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, to supporting human rights and civil society in Bangladesh, and to deepening our people-to-people and economic ties."
In February this year, Eileen Laubacher, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for South Asia, US National Security Council (NSC); Michael Schiffer, USAID
Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Asia; and Afreen Akhter, US Department of State Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, paid a three-day visit to Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Donald Lu is coming to Bangladesh to take ahead the relations between Bangladesh and the USA.
He also said Donald Lu is paying visit to Bangladesh to follow up the letter sent by US President Joe Biden congratulating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her reelection in the 12th national elections.
